Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the growth cycle of skin cells. Skin cells build up on the surface and form thick, silvery scale-like patches on the skin that can be painful and itchy.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Red patches of skin covered with scales
  • Small scaling spots (common in children)
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
  • Itching, burning or soreness
  • Thickened or ridged nails
  • Swollen and stiff joints

For most people with psoriasis the condition is mostly just a nuisance, but in more severe cases it can be painful and disabling.

What causes psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a disorder of the immune system in which cells attack healthy skin cells.
